Buying your Name’s Domain Name

Do you own your name’s domain name? If you don’t then this is the time to do so.

I bought my name’s domain name 4 months ago (omarkattan.com) and have been developing it as a search blog ever since.

The main benefit of owning your name’s domain name (especially the .com one) is that it shows up in first position when people search for your name.  This is becoming more important since more and more people are “googling” people they want to learn more about.  Googlers can include:

  1. Employers wanting to learn more aout you

  2. Bankers wanting to investigate you before they give you a loan

  3. An ex-spouse wanting to research how much money you have before he/she sues. (Okay, okay they probably already know that piece of info but I ‘m trying to make a point here!)

It is therefore a good idea to buy your name’s domain name and the process can’t be simpler.

  1. Go to a domain registrar like GoDaddy.com

  2. search for your name.

  3. buy it (it usually costs around $9)

  4. Develop it.

Good luck and if you have any questions fire away…

Iran Blocks Google Access

Iran Bans GoogleIran has decided to block access to Google search and Gmail service.  This is supposedly part of a “clampdown on material deemed to be offensive” as reported by the Mehr news agency.

Hamid Shahriari,  secretary of Iran’s National Council of Information said,  ”I can confirm these sites have been filtered.”

Similar to China, Iran has very tough censorship laws banning websites that promote sexual and politically sensitive content.  Iran also censors sites discussing women’s rights.

Iran’s latest censorship laws are part of an ongoing clampdown on an internet-savvy society attempting to embrace western ideals and habits.

Will it last?  Maybe for a while, but this is exactly what will inevitably bring down the current leadership… but lets wait and see…

Learning SEO - how I did it

omar.jpgSo how did I learn SEO?  … The simple answer … I taught myself.

Its not that difficult really, well not the basics at least, but the best way to learn SEO is to actually practice it on one of your sites.

Thats how I started.  5 years ago I decided to build my very own website UKresident.com, a UK immigration site.  The reason I started it was because I had just arrived in the UK and found it very frustrating that I couldn’t find a good website to help people like mysef settle in, but that’s another story all together.

Back to the topic… Having my own website naturally made me want to make it rank higher in the search results for my target keyword (UK Residency, where I currently rank at the #1 position) … (pats himself on the back).

So anway, specifically… how did I do it?  Well it was a mixture of things really but the main thing I would say was the provision of fresh daily content through the forum I had later created (more about that later).

When I first started it was a struggle to rank for any keyword and as a result, the traffic was abysmal.  This did not deter me however, It actually made me want to work harder at actually ranking for the keywords of choice and so I started digging deeper.

Initially I started joining most of the SEO forums out there but the main one I focused on was WebmasterWorld (a great site by the way and run by an equally great guy, Brett Tabke).  Most of the forums talked about fresh content and the concept of becoming an authority in one’s field.  They mentioned that one way to do it is to establish a forum where experts respond to people’s questions, and so I embarked on creating that mythical forum.

I managed to attract UK immigration lawyers who were happy to respond to people’s questions in return for getting publicity for their firm.  And this is how the UK resident forum became an authority in its field.  Driving thousand of new users, links and fresh content on a daily basis.

However, the forum was not enough.  I wanted to learn more about SEO and specifically, how to make this fresh new content rank higher,  however, I wasn’t really sure how I would do that.

This is where SEO Book fits in.  I decided to buy an online copy of this raved about book to see what the fuss was all about and what do you know, it actually was a fantastic book!  It goes through the who SEO process from Keyword research to implemeting the research findings in both onsite as well as offsite SEO activities.

The best thing about this book however was the way it was written, -a very casual sort of way.   Aaron Wall, the author of the book writes in a manner that makes learning SEO fun and un intimedating.

So armed with Aaron’s advice, techniques and tips as well as all my ongoing learnings from the SEO forums,   I was now in a better position to optimise my site to achieve the rankings I want.

A sleepless night

Welcome to my Blog.

My name is Omar Kattan and this is my first blog.   Funny really since I work in search and I probably should have had one of these niftty things a long long time ago! Well, better late than never I say.

Anyway… The reason I started this blog was because I recently bought my own name’s domain name (omarkattan.com) and wanted to use it for something so I thought.. maybe a blog would be a good idea!  And so here we are…

Its actually 3:19 in the morning now and I couldn’t sleep so I figured I’ll stay up and start posting my first entry,  so here it is…

What will this blog be about?  Well mostly about search (as in digital search) and my work and experiences with it (5 years so far) including the sites I’ve built and the experiences I’ve had/will have in working with search engines (both paid and organic).

I will also attempt to keep this blog updated with the latest search news including the latest technologies, trends and fast moving developments in the fascinating world of search.

I hope you find my posts both informative as well as insightful.  If they are,  please do post comments and feel free to ask questions.

Until another sleepless night…
