Yang Back at the Helm of Yahoo
Jerry Yang has replaced Terry Semel as CEO of Yahoo! Inc. The news came yesterday as Yang said “(he’s) ready to dig in and make sure we can take Yahoo to the next level, `I’m absolutely not interim. We want someone for the long-haul.”
But is Yank really up for the top job again? Well, there are three issues here to consider:
1- He’s up against Google with close to $11 Billion in cash and securities vs Yahoo’s $3 Billion, so in a straight spending match he will lose.
2- Yahoo has lost its direction over the years trying to be everything to everyone while Google has stayed very much focused on “organising the world’s information and making it universally accessible and useful” to all.
3- The market share for searches is dominated by the big G with almost double that of its closest competitor, Y!, and thats not going to change anytime soon.
Can Yang pull it off? Well not immediately, his leadership will most deffinitely benefit Yahoo but he just needs to focus on search and invest heavily in technology.
